Essentials for the first blog

The WordPress blogging platform has many strengths, and this is why it is by far the easiest platform to use, and the best. If you are new to WordPress, there are many options to explore, and after a little use will leave you nodding your head in admiration.

To get the best out of WordPress, it is essential that you learn about plugins, widgets, and themes. These will enhance your blog both from an aesthetic perspective, and help bring your blog to a wider audience. This way, you will hopefully attract a wider readership.

This being the case, this article deals with the essentials of what you should do to make the blog the best it can be from the beginning.

Theme

We have dedicated whole articles to this very topic, but in essence is about creating a mood. Try and think of it as a feeling rather than an appearance, and obviously the theme should be related to your blog. A music blog for example, may want a theme of a venue or club. One that rotates around music learning, may want to give the feeling of learning scales in a studio. Try and think about what you are after and apply your theme accordingly. Try not to get to entangled in specifics of columns, and sidebars. Just try and recreate online, what you would like to experience offline.

Plugins and widgets.

Plugins, are for me one of the best inventions known to humanity. It must rank number three after the flushing toilet and the wheel? Anyway, plugins add features to your blog, and either work in the background, and handle functions such as search engine optimization, and statistical data collection, or they enhance the appearance of the blog, often creating sidebar widgets. The beauty of plugins is they are largely created by WordPress users to address limitations of the basic WordPress platform, and in doing so improve WordPress overall. Many are free, though a donation to the creator is polite, and they all are very easy to install. When finding plugins, only use ones that are compatible to your version of WordPress. Ideally, your current version of WordPress should be the most recent.

Widgets are elements that sit in the sidebar and generally make it easier for your readers to do, or access something. Some are used solely for display purposes, and some are just for fun. There are all kinds of widgets that have practical functions too. The general rule is less is more, but rules are meant to be broken. Don’t be afraid to experiment.

Personally, I just drop in the ones I like, and don’t worry too much about anything else.

The essential WordPress plugins you should be thinking about installing for that first blog are:

Platinum SEO plugin. All things SEO related are contained in this plugin, as spreading the word of your blog is just as essential as writing one.

Google Analyicator plugin. This plugin makes your WordPress pages visible on your Google Analytics account. This way you can see what posts and pages are popular, and which ones are not. Other data from Analytics is also visible such as the sources of your blogs traffic, and how many visitors the site is receiving.

XML Sitemap plugin. This plugin is another must, as it creates an XML sitemap of your blog which is food and drink to Google’s webmaster tools. Here you can see how many sites have linked to yours, what keywords conjure impressions on search engines, and gauge the healthiness of your blog.

WP Captcha Free. This plugin puts a captcha on your comment posting but only if the poster is non human. This clever plugin works on timing, and is indeed a work of genius.

Other Plugins you should consider are ones that go to promote the mood of the theme. If your blog is about cookery, then a plugin that lists menus from different restaurants could be a great one for your site.

My own site is all about my freelance writing endeavours, so I have opted for an intimate theme that gives the feel of reading long into the night. The plugins and widgets I have opted for either go to promote story telling, or have a functional use such as social networking.

Once these have been installed, and are working you are then ready to write your first blog. Whatever the subject matter, the content has to be vibrant, relevant, and compelling, no matter how small the niche. The themes, the plugins, the widgets are great, but none can override stale content. Content is King, all the rest of it are members at court.

When writing the blog, think about what is the most important and most interesting elements to it are, and concentrate on bringing these to the foreground. Try and imagine what you would want from your blog if you were a reader, and strive to bring that to life.

Other factors which make blogs more popular are:

Pictures – A picture grabs a readers attention and can break up large passages of text, which can be off putting to many web readers.

Content – As mentioned before keep it compelling, vibrant and relevant. You may want to consider short paragraphs if possible. One thing to remember about a blog is that titles catch the eye, so a more creative one will probably get more readers.

Posting regularly – It is better to post regularly than erratically. So the key is to stick to a schedule. A post here and a post there, does not aid your quest to retain readership.

Many new bloggers are tempted to post all the time, which is great if you can do it, but if the content is not hitting the right chords, then this will make little if not no difference to attracting and retaining readers. Remember that content is truly King, so if you are going to post make sure that the content is as described above. Two good posts are easily worth five average ones.

Promote discussion – Discussions always go well with blogging, so it is a good idea to try and get people to join in with the post. As long as you’re not deliberately controversial, you will find more interest from your readers if they can put forward their view on a post.

Attracting readers

After your blog has been written the next stage is to get people to read it. You could be the next Shakespeare, and not a soul would know because your words are read by no one else. WordPress and blogging is all part of the web 2.0 phenomenon, like social media. Therefore social media is a good tool to get visitors to the blog.

The following provide good foundation for social media exposure.

Twitter, write a blog, tell your followers

Digg, write a blog, get digg to show it

Delicious. Same as above just slightly different

Facebook. Creating a page for your blog and link it to twitter is always a good idea.

My Space. Tell the world about your space.

There are hundreds of other social media out there, that can be utilized to bring you exposure. Some are more appropriate than others. Many social media sites can be linked to each other, which saves you time in getting the message out there.

It can be a daunting prospect when you first start blogging. New worlds and new methods will open up before you, but you will have fun exploring them, and soon it will feel like you have been blogging for years.

jQuery WordPress Plugins Strikes Again

Following on from our last post, we felt you needed more jQuery plugins. Not because you do not seem to understand the power of jQuery, but because there were more we liked and wanted to tell you about. We have also included links to a few tutorials so be sure to take a look at them, as we all feel they are pretty good. So without further ado, lets get down and dirty with some more jQuery WordPress plugins.

Shockingly Big IE6 Warning Plugin. Not only does this have to be the best name for a plugin ever, it is also a truly great plugin as it displays a warning above a blog telling people not to use IE6 and the reasons why. Go Shockingly Big IE6 Warning Plugin.

WP-Slimbox2 Plugin. This plugin utilizes jQuery to create impressive image overlays with slide out effects. Again a great plugin if you utilize pictures in your blog.

Live Blogroll Plugin. The idea of this plugin, is that it enhances the blogroll in the following ways. When the mouse is hovered over a link in the blogroll, it creates a text box which features comments and RSS details. It is powered by Ajax.

Photoxhibit Plugin. This baby allows you to use pictures from your Flickr, Picasa, and, or Smug accounts to build photo galleries for your blog. You can also upload your own pictures for this project.

WordPress Sidebar Turned Apple Flashy Using jQuery UI Tutorial. With a title like that, what can it all mean? Well basically this is not a plugin, but a tutorial to create a sidebar like the start page of an Apple. In other words, make a classy one.

How To Create Tabs Using jQuery Tutorial. Tabbed navigation is a bonus as it gives quick and easy access to various parts of your site. This tutorial will enable you to build and design your own tabs, and make you the envy of all your blogging friends.

jQuery Reply To Comment Plugin. Providing you have jQuery installed on your blog, you can add two links to a post. Normally “reply”, and “quote”.

My Page Order Plugin. As you know, setting the order of pages on your blog can be a clumsy process, and an overly frustrating one. By using this plugin, a drag and drop interface is created and thus the urge to throw things out of the window, is not evoked.

WordPress Featured Post Slideshow Plugin. This plugin allows you to create animated slideshows, which should be eye catching if nothing else.

GD Star Rating Plugin. This is a great plugin for increasing interaction between reader and you, as it allows your blog posts to be rated. Many options are available for displaying the stars as well as creating sidebars to show the most top rated articles etc.

Create A Featured WordPress Slider Using jFlow Tutorial. This tutorial will show you how to create sliding content areas where featured articles can be seen. Navigation is easily customized too.

Adding Form Validation To WordPress Comments Using jQuery Tutorial. Want to learn how to validate a form without out reloading a page and possibly losing form content? Good, follow the link and find out.

Using jQuery To Enhance A Clients Log-in Experience Tutorial. Well you don’t want your clients thinking you’re boring, so create a jQuery lightbox to make your clients feel enhanced.

These plugins and tutorials should help you make the most of your blog using the powerful jQuery to its potential. Just be sure to choose which options you want with care, and try and determine before hand what it will add to your blog.

Ads aren’t all about Adsense you know

One of the appeals of blogging, is that it gives you the chance to make money while telling the world of your genius, or the great product or feature that you write about on your blog. You probably have at least heard about Google Adsense, but there are other types of advertising with different companies other than Google that you may want to consider.

So let’s take a look at the most popular advertising companies, starting with the trusted Google Adsense.

Google Adsense is the biggest ad company of its kind on the web. It has more companies to chose from when placing its ads. You may feel the phrase “placing the ads”, is a little strange, but that in reality as what it does. You tell Adsense where you want the ads, and what kind of ads you want on your site, and then Google places the ads on your website. So you never have to actually carry out any maintenance to the site other than putting the Adsense code on it in the first place.

There are additional options to chose from, such as having content related ads on the site, so if your blog is about skiing for example, then those kind of ads pull through. You can also eliminate certain niches. So if you do not want certain products advertised on the site, then you do not have to have them.

Traditionally, financial ads get the most click throughs: Debt consolidation, mortgages, credit cards, insurance, and so no and fourth. The trick with Adsense is experimentation. As you probably know, Adsense is a pay per click advertising company. So the more clicks, the more money you receive.

Clickbank, on the other hand, works from sales revenue. They normally sell e-books and other digital products, and for every sale that is generated from your website, you earn a percentage from it. Sometimes this can be as high as 75%, which obviously means you can make money using Clickbank, and potentially more money than with Google Adsense.

Commission Junction and Linkshare are two companies which promote affiliate advertising on your blog. This is where companies place a link to their sites, and pay you per click. As both Commission Junction and Linkshare, have some very well renowned brands on their books: Apple, Walmart, HP, Weight Watchers, HP, and so on and so fourth, there is not only a strong possibility of a click, but your website is affiliated to an established brand, which does your reputation no harm at all.

There is plenty of testing involved however, to find the right kind of products or ads to promote, but once you have nailed it, then this can be a very lucrative way to make money from your blog.

If you are planning to go for this route, then it is a good idea to sign up to both Linkshare and Commission Junction, to maximise your revenue potential.

Amazon Associates and eBay Partner Networks (EPN)

This is where the two companies sell products from the sites on your blog. As you know these sites offer two of the biggest market places on the web, and as the ads you can create are fully customizable, so choosing the right product or ad for your blog is relatively straight forward.

It can also happen pretty fast too. In about an hour, you can setup an estore from Amazon, and have it stocked with products related from your blog.

Both Amazon and eBay are quite selective about which sites get accepted to the program, so there is a possibility you could be turned down. However, should you chose to try this method of advertising and you are accepted, it is possible to make a fair amount of money.

When choosing an ad company, be careful to read very carefully any stipulations the ad company makes about using their ads, and remember, it is not all about Adsense you know.

More SEO plugins for WordPress

Following on from our post which showcased SEO WordPress Plugins, we have found some more that could be of specific help. As you know, bringing in traffic to the blog is everything, and the more of it you have the better.

So here are some more SEO plugins for WordPress, that will help you search engine optimize your blog in some way or another, and with Google, MSN, and Yahoo knowing what you are about, can only help your genius be recognised by the world.

SEO friendly and HTML valid subheadings. It is possible for some WordPress themes to confuse your sub header tags based on the page they are displayed on. As some elements of SEO are geared around optimizing the header tags, this is not really a good thing where SEO is concerned. This plugin moves the goal posts and the sub header tags down one step in the hierarchical tree by making h1 h2, and h2 h3, and so on and so fourth. Keeping everything SEO sweet.

SEO friendly Images. Images are great for blogs as they give them a certain something, the downside is they are not searchable unless they have alt and title tags. This little beauty gives the pictures alt and title tags so search engines can index them properly. Also, if someone is searching for your image and they find one on your blog that they like, it has also become a good traffic puller. Think about it.

SEO No Duplicate WordPress Plugin. If you have duplicated content on your blog, then this little plugin will allow you to tell search engines which one should be indexed by search engines, and which one should not. This is handy if you have work you are proud of, that is to be seen by the world, and work that should never be seen not even by you. Not that I feel you have much of the latter?

SEO Post Link. Search engines are fussy, and if the title of your blog is too long they don’t like it. It is not a marmite type of scenario either, so it is not the case that some search engines like it, some don’t, none of them do. If your blog title has more letters in it than a title of a song in the Mary Poppins film, don’t despair. This plugin will cut some of the words from the URL from a list of inbuilt keywords, so when the URL is posted it is search engine friendly. Phew! Also, you can limit the number of characters in it as well. Wonderful stuff.

SEO Smart Links. We all know that interlinking your blog with other blogs gets the word out there. It is a good way to get people in the groove of whatever it is you are trying to do. This clever ditty will take much of the tedium and hard work out of it, by linking to URLs specified by you through a keyword system. You can also specify “nofollow” and “openwindow” commands for the broken links. If only we had plugins like this for real life!

Hopefully, now you have more SEO plugins for WordPress as well as the exciting and sexy SEO plugins for WordPress, you will soon have so much traffic to your blog, that a retirement plan in Bermuda is not out of the question. If you are not quite there yet, we are planning a third go at SEO plugins soon, so stay tuned, sit tight, and order those Bermuda brochures. You might be needing them soon!

Push the blog for blogging glory

The power of the blog should never be underestimated by web designers and web masters alike. These pages on a site can are multifunctional, and are both traffic pullers and retainers. They are also a good way of engaging with your readership, which gives your company or website a human face.

Of course, one of the factors that determines whether or not your blog succeeds is getting people to look at it in the first place. A lot has been written about this subject, but in my opinion only the basics have been covered. The aim of this article is to open your mind to different ways of pushing your blog, to attract traffic from unlikely quarters.

The basics

Social networking: Much has been written about spreading the word of your blog through this medium. There is a lot of justification in this claim, as one person recommending your site, carries a lot of weight with other potential blog readers. The following sites I have found to be the most useful for spreading the word.

Facebook – Not so much for telling your friends about your blog, though this always helps, but the power of Facebook advertising is nothing short of incredible. If the aim of your blog is to sell a product or service, then you should investigate advertising on Facebook rather than, in my opinion, Google.

When I advertised www.link-optimise.com simultaneously on Facebook and Google, Facebook pulled in an average of 80 hits per day, compared to 6 per day from the mighty G. The reason? Though your ad may appear as an impression with Google, it does not guarantee it is going to be seen by the public at large. To see the ad, a person may well have to click on the “more links” button, and then click “more”, to actually view the ad. Nobody does this unless they are trying to discover where exactly their ad is making an impression.

Facebook, on the other hand, puts an add right in front of your target demographics screen. They are just off to the right and good ad wording, in our case “Tired of being nowhere on search engines”, catches the eye. Though you could argue that an impression is wasted if it is not at the target audience, it is more wasted if it does not appear on screen at all. Considering an impression on Facebook has a target audience in the millions, can you really ask for a better place to put an ad?

You can also create a Facebook page for your blog, and if you are a regular reader, you will know you can link your WordPress blog to Facebook and vice versa.

Twitter. A very good site for telling your following that you have a blog and to draw attention to anything that is new on the blog, whether it be a new look, article, picture, or page. It is also good for letting people know there is a blog and it is yours. If you think of twitter, think of blog promotion. As with all social networking sites you can link them together, so linking twitter to your Facebook page for your blog, is highly recommended. That way updates on the blog page of Facebook, appear as tweets on twitter automatically.

Digg and Delicious are two other good social networking sites. Every time you upload something new on your blog, you can bring attention to it via Digg. A good choice of words and a good following on Digg, can generate readers of your articles which is what you want. If you are a clever user, you can write about a similar article to one that is already popular via Digg, and capture the same readership in the process.

Delicious is another good site which works in a similar way. The difference being that it brings attention to an entire page, rather than an article, picture, or film. This site is especially popular with designers who use it to showcase their work. Delicious is not limited to works of design however, and showcasing your articles on this site are always a winner.

Technorati. This is a great way not so much of spreading the word, but to generate links to your site, which is what Google analyses when working out where to put your blog following a search for your site on a search engine page. See back links below.

There are other social networking sites, that cater for a more specific kind of blog, or artistic works. My Space is perfect for musicians, as is blip.fm for music lovers. There are hundreds of social networking sites, and they all have their niche. Take time to explore and to enjoy them.

Use WordPress for you blog.

The advantages of WordPress as the platform for your blog has been showcased all over the web. Not only can it be customised very easily every hour of every day if you want to, it also has some great plugins for search engine optimization. I have found these plugins to be very good at generating that much needed search engine awareness, and to track my progress of my blog, as it battles for supremacy on the net.

Platinum SEO pack. Gets you noticed on Google and the like. Make sure you check the options.

Google analyicator. I have found this the most effective plugin for linking your blog to your Google analytics account.

XML sitemap plugin. This creates an XML sitemap of your blog, which is perfect for Google’s Webmaster Tools.

Another great advantage to WordPress is its ease of use. Not just for themes and plugins, but to upload content to it. This does not have to be the written word either. Photos, films, and sound files can all be easily placed on your blog, and then they are all there for the world to see. Clever use of the facilities offered by WordPress can make all the difference to how your blog appears to readers.

WordPress, can also be used to feature social networking buttons, so it is easy for readers to link to your other social networking sites, as well as subscribe to your RSS feed.

A quick note on search engine optimization and how it ties in with social networks and pushing your blog.

When you write an article or upload something to your blog, it is a good idea to use as many social networking sites as possible to spread the word an event has taken place on your blog. This can be a time consuming process, which is why it is important to link as many social networks together as possible.

What you write to promote your blog is very important. Search engines look for something called anchor text. This is text that is embedded in source code, that can be linked to similar words on your blog, or what you write to promote your blog. I have found that on twitter, if I want to draw attention to myself as a freelance writer, a phrase such as “New article on Teahon”, the anchor texts will be, “article, Teahon”. This is ok, but it has not linked freelance writer with myself or my article. If I write “New article from Teahon, freelance writer”, then the chances are it will create the following anchor text. “Article, Teahon, freelance writer.”

When choosing words to push an article try and use ones that link what you do, who you are, and what you want people to know, together. It does not have to be Shakespeare, just meaningful and precise.

Further ways to search engine optimize

If you know anything about search engine optimization, then you are undoubtedly aware of a concept called back linking. This is the main ingredient for search engine optimization, and is in essence, external links to your website from others. Think of this as a voting system, that search engines use to rate your blog in the wider world.

Digg creates a good back link to your site, as does technorati. So be sure to push your sites on these mediums. If you want to increase popularity further, then you can post on discussion forums and blogs that are similar in nature to your own. If you are flowing this route, be sure to post constructive contributions, and not just rubbish like “Great post, thanks”. It is unlikely to get past comment moderation software if you do, and quite rightly so in my opinion.

Another good way of promoting back links is to submit articles to article submission sites. Ensure there is a link to your site from the articles, and you will have a good, solid back link to your blog.

A controversial route is to submit your site to website directories. Google, is reported not to like these and ranks them little in the way of solid back linking to your website. I paid a company to put my site www.teahon.co.uk, on a hundred website directories, and found that Google did not rate any according to Webmaster Tools data. Having said that, it did generate a lot of direct traffic, so was it a complete waste of money?

Competitions.

These are a good way to generate interest in your blog, and does not mean you have to fork out a bundle of cash either, providing you box a little clever. Many websites will donate prizes to you providing you mention them in your blog. How far this has to go will have to be negotiated by you, but in general as they are putting up the prize, a whole section of the blog for the competition could be a good idea.

Content

It can not be overstated how important it is that your blog’s content engages with your readership. Stale content loses traffic and once it is lost, it is extremely hard to get it back. Ensure that your content, is relevant, accurate, and speaks to the reader or viewer. Try and promote debate with your articles without being obvious. The more people that join in the better. Remember, the content is what blogging is about. If this lets you down, no amount of promoting is going to keep people coming back for more.

There is no substitute for engaging, vibrant and interesting content. Content is King, everything else is nobles at court. Make sure you regularly update it to.

I have found these to be good ways to promote your blog, or website. They are all fairly easy to implement, and a little time, effort and careful choice of words, can really make your blog shine through from the crowd.

It is worth remembering that blogging is highly competitive in some areas, and only by promoting your blog in someway will you gain attention for it.

Installation

Please be sure to read the installation instructions included in the zip file. For the impatient, here they are:

  1. Create a directory /wp-content/backup/ inside your WordPress directory.
    $ cd wordpress/wp-content
    $ mkdir backup
  2. Make this directory writable by your webserver.
    $ chgrp www-data backup
    $ chmod g+w backup
  3. Insall and activate the plugin
  4. Navigate to Manage -> Backup
  5. Backup!
    • PHP memory limit: server operators can limit the amount of memory a PHP script may use. If the size of your database backup exceeds this limit, the backup will not succeed.
    • PHP time out: server operators can limit the amount of time for which a PHP script may run. If it takes longer than this amount of time to backup your database, the backup will not succeed.
    • Email attachment file size limitations: many email providers do not accept email attachments greater than a certain size. If your database backup is excessively large, it may not make it to your Inbox.
    • insufficient disk space: although extremely unlikely, if your server does not have space to store the temporary backup file, the backup will not succeed.
  1. Delivery Method Details

    None
This will save the database backup in your /wp-content/backup/ directory on your server. This is provided as a convenience only. Please do not leave your database backup files lying around!
    Email
The backup file will be emailed to the address you specify. Gzip compression is strongly encouraged. Once delivered, the backup file will be deleted from the server.
    Download
The backup file will be sent to your browser, where you can save it to your local workstation. Gzip compression is strongly encouraged. Once downloaded, the backup file will be deleted from the server.

    The Fine Print

This plugin works for me. Currently, I have about 160 posts, with a little over one thousand comments. A gzip compressed backup of my database produced with this plugin is about 460 KB. This plugin was successfully tested on another blog with 1369 posts and 4000 comments. The gzipped backup file was ahout 1.3 megabytes, and was successfully emailed and downloaded. If you have a huge database (tens of thousands of posts and comments) this plugin may not work for you, for any of the following reasons:

Please note that including the database tables for your plugins in the backup is likely to introduce any (or all) of the problems listed above. Plugins like user and statistics tracking, or spam filter logs, can grow to enormous sizes.

Finally, although this plugin works for me, I will not accept any responsibility for any problems that this may cause for you. Use this plugin at your own risk.
